The Okuma Citrix 300 (Reviews & Buying Guide)

A reel that is easy to control for almost any fishing condition is the Okuma Citrix 300. This baitcasting reel has a large capacity and excellent line management. It is a 7.3:1 reel which means it is enough to power to work around and in with plastics and jigs. However, it is not recommended as a deep cranking reel.

Citrix 300 is a strong reel which you can take for stripper, salmon, or for other inshore species. From its previous model, Okuma has improved a lot of things in this product and has also increased the bearing count. With this reel, the angels will get an option to choose a configuration and they can also customize the reels according to their needs.

There are many more features that will suit any anglers. We have discussed all those features below, so let’s have a look at it.

Features of Okuma Citrix 300

Gear Ratio

The Okuma Citrix 300 has a gear ratio of 6.4:1. It can be retrieved in both hands. For this gear ratio, the reel feels very versatile and it has become an ideal choice for different fishing techniques. The previous version of this model was with a different gear ratio so make sure you are purchasing the updated one. As we all know that the gear ratio is very important when it comes to getting success in fishing.

This gear ratio is an average gear ratio, but this is enough to get the bait at its maximum depth and it will give the angler to feel a superior power. The angler will know what is happening there and thus he can have more control over the reel. With this gear ratio, the angler can do anything faster or slower, but the angler needs to crank it slow or fast in that case.

Ball Bearings

Now about the next important feature of any reel is the condition of the ball bearings. As we have mentioned earlier, the number of bearings decides how much smooth function you are going to get from the reel. The higher number of bearings ensures more smoothness but the cost also high. However, there are some reels with fewer bearings but those can also operate pretty well. In the case of Okuma Citrix 300, it has an 8 ball bearings system. There is a high number of bearings and that’s why you will get the best result from it. Not only there are many bearings, but all these bearings come with a high tight tolerance.

Aluminum Spools

The design and construction of the spool is another very important thing that you may consider. Most of the reel’s spool is made with either anodized aluminum or graphite. The Okuma Citrix 300 has spools made with anodized aluminum. The spool prevents the line from getting entangled when there is a case of an internal pool among the reel housing.

It also determines the casting distance and plays a significant role to create the smoothness that your reel requires. One great thing about the Okuma Citrix 300 is that the user can control the spool’s movement just by holding it with his/her thumb. It is a very useful feature especially when you are casting a long distance.

Drag System

The Okuma Citrix 300 comes with a multi-disc Carbonite drag system. What is a Carbonite drag system? It is made with carbon-based drag material which helps to displace friction and heat. No matter what is the fishing condition it will operate in the same way. If you want to get the ultimate performance from this reel, then you should use the drag grease formulated especially for Okuma’s reel.

After doing several tests on the drag system, it is found that it can adjust to any condition. Without any hiccup, it can perform well when you are trying to pull the fish on the drag. So overall, for this high-quality drag system you will get a consistent performance from the Okuma Citrix 300.

Retrieve

The Okuma Citrix 300 has a noticeably refined retrieve system. However, while using you will feel that the connection between the handle and the gears is slight. The retrieve of the Citrix 300 is smooth, yet it could have been better as there is a back play in the handle.

Pros

  • Rigid die-cast aluminum frame
  • 25-lbs of maximum drag
  • Dual anti-reverse system
  • 7 position velocity control
  • On/off bait clicker

Cons

  • Sometimes the drag can become a little sporadic
